Samsung’s Galaxy brand has gained immense popularity over the years, with the Galaxy S flagship smartphones being the central figure for driving the brand’s popularity. However, at this year’s IFA held at Berlin, Samsung chose to highlight the other aspects of the Galaxy brand, namely the tablet and the phablet, while also introducing a new product. The new product that Samsung revealed is the Galaxy Gear, a smartwatch, while the tablet and phablet were the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 and the Galaxy Note 3, respectively. Now to see what all these devices are about.
Galaxy Gear
Let’s start with the new kid on the block. The Galaxy Gear is part of the new trend of smartwatches that has entered the mobile market. These smartwatches are marketed as companion devices for smartphones and the Galaxy Gear is the same. Currently, the Gear will be able to pair up with the newly launched Galaxy Note 3 and the Note 10.1, with further support for the other Galaxy devices coming in the near future.
So, what’s inside the Galaxy Gear? For starters, there is an 800MHz Exynos processor that provides the processing power for the smartwatch. Users get a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display at a resolution of 320x320 pixels to interact with as well as a 1.9MP camera with a BSI sensor to take quick pictures and record 720p videos. There is 4GB of internal storage with 512MB RAM and a 315mAh battery, which can reportedly power the device for 25 hours. There’s more on the Galaxy Gear as it can also make and receive calls using the two microphones and a speaker.
That’s all the Gear has inside but what does it do with all that hardware? Before using the features on the Gear, it must first connect to a Samsung Galaxy device and this is done using Bluetooth 4.0 as the connection medium. Once connected, the Gear will be able to access some features such as the Smart Relay, which shows a preview of an email before using the smartphone to view the full mail. Another nifty feature included with the Gear is the S voice, which allows the user to control the some aspects of the device without actually touching the screen. A Pedometer is also included, which with an appropriate fitness app, can keep track of your daily run routines. Samsung’s ChatOn messaging service also finds its way onto the Gear allowing the user to send messages from the watch itself. And finally, the Galaxy Gear can also carry out all the functions of a regular watch.
Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition
Along with the new Galaxy Gear, Samsung have also released a revision to their tablet line, which comes in the form of the Galaxy Note 10.1. To start things off, the Note 10.1 is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor for the 4G LTE version and 1.9GHz octa-core Exynos processor for the 3G variant. As the name suggests, the Note 10.1 features a 10.1-inch Super Clear LCD display running at a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels, which should provide a rich, high definition visual experience. The Note 10.1 also has cameras onboard with the rear camera being 8MP while at the front a 2MP camera with a BSI sensor is present. The 8MP camera is also capable of recording 1080p, full HD videos. On the memory front, the Note 10.1 comes with 3GB RAM and will be available in 16, 32, and 64 GB variants, all of which come with an expandable microSD slot. And finally, the Nite 10.1 has been given a massive 8220mAh battery which promises long usage times between charges.
Samsung have made the Note 10.1 a powerful machine in terms of hardware but even the best hardware can be brought down by a poorly executed UI. This is not the case with the Note 10.1 as it comes equipped with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean right out of the box along with the much improved Touchwiz UI. Many of the enhancements brought to the Touchwiz are related to the S Pen, which is a key feature of the Note devices. The S Pen gets Air Control wherein the user can hover the stylus over the screen and click to bring forth a fan dock, which reveals further options and additional apps to open without closing the active app. Using the S Pen also gives users access to another key feature of the Note and that is the multitasking capabilities of the device put into practice using the Multi-window feature. While using an app, the user can bring up the Air Control dock and from here, draw a square or rectangle on screen to open up new apps or windows. This means that a user can have a document, internet browser, and the email app, all open at the same time.
Galaxy Note 3
In addition to the Galaxy Gear and the Note 10.1, Samsung also released the successor to the popular Note 2. The Galaxy Note 3, like the Note 10.1, has been made a powerful device by Samsung and this is evident from the processors variants being offered. The 4G LTE variant will get a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, while the 3G variant comes with a 1.9GHz Exynos quad-core processor and a 1.3GHz quad-core Exynos processor. Samsung have provided the Note 3 with 5.7-inch Super AMOLED display, which runs at a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels or 386 pixels. The 13MP rear and 2MP front camera represents the photographic capabilities of the Note 3, with the front receiving a BSI sensor and smart stabilization. The rear camera will also record Full HD 1080p 60fps videos with some models reportedly getting the capability to record at 4K resolutions. The Note 3 comes with 32GB and 64GB internal storage, which can be expanded through the microSD slot as well as 3GB of RAM. The 3200mAh removable battery on the Note 3 is a high capacity battery that should see a user get through a day easily.
The Note 3 follows in the footsteps of the Note 10.1 and comes with a much improved Touchwiz UI that has the same functions as the ones seen on the Note 10.1. The S Pen included with the Note 3 is more useful here than it is on the Note 10.1 as the Note 3 goes from being a smartphone to a very functional notepad. On the feature front, all the features present on the Note 10.1 also making an appearance here as well. Multi-window, multitasking, and Air Command all make their way onto the Note 3.
Wrapping it up
Samsung continues to bring new innovations with their latest being the Galaxy Gear smartwatch. In addition to their new innovative products, Samsung also continues to add new features to their existing products and this is evident from their latest updates of the Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Note 3. With all of these products, Samsung looks to continue dominating the consumer electronics market for the foreseeable future.
